The Email Marketing Advice I Stopped Following (What to Do Instead)
If I had a nickel for every time a business owner told me that social media and content marketing burned them out, I wouldn’t have to work anymore. 🤑
Something absolutely NO ONE talks about is creative burnout. Coming up with content ideas can burn you out just as hard as executing them. I don’t know the neuroscience behind all that, but I know that our brains can only handle so much.
This burnout was actually part of my villain origin story of becoming an email marketer, but more on that later. 😅
This kind of creative burnout reveals itself in email marketing too. Does this sound familiar?
→ You don’t email consistently because you don’t know what to say.
→ You ghost your list because you’re convinced email isn’t working and you’re too tired to figure out why.
→ You don’t know how email fits into your broader marketing plan.
I’ve been in all of these places.
For years, I believed good marketing meant doing more. Now, I believe it’s about doing what fits your business in a way that is sustainable.
I learned that marketing should fit your capacity, not consume it. That realization completely changed how I approach email marketing and eventually led me to create Welcome Email Lab.
Burnout Was the Wake-Up Call
Before I specialized in email marketing, I worked as a social media manager.
Like many marketers, I wore a lot of hats. I worked in social media, content creation, SEO, and everything in between.
That experience gave me a bigger-picture view of content marketing. I could see how all the pieces fit together, but I also saw something else: the advice everyone was following was unsustainable.
The constant pressure to create fresh content, stay active on every platform, and chase every new trend was exhausting. I felt it myself, and I watched my clients feel it too.
(This became so acute that I even ordered an app blocker to curb my phone addiction).
Something I noticed with those clients is that they seemed overly reliant on social media, and that constant pressure to perform left a bad taste in their mouths. They were also underusing email.
Over time, it became clear that the problem was that they were trying to maintain marketing systems that demanded more time and energy than they actually had.
That experience shaped the philosophy I still follow today: your marketing should help you accomplish more with the capacity you already have.
That belief is what eventually led me to email marketing. Email is a high-ROI marketing channel and a way to create a business that doesn’t rely on socials.
Ironically, while I was building my own email business, I struggled with my own newsletter. I was sending emails, but they were not converting the way I hoped they would.
It was an exercise in introspection because I had to learn what blocks me from being consistent!
At the same time, I was writing welcome sequences for clients and started noticing something interesting: welcome emails were often the missing bridge between someone discovering their business on social media and becoming a paying client.
Welcome Emails: What Most People Downplay
As I worked with more clients, I kept seeing the same pattern.
Many business owners had welcome sequences, but they focused almost entirely on themselves. They talked about their business, their story, and their credentials without connecting those things back to the reason someone joined their list in the first place.
The result: subscribers signed up, received a few emails, and never built a meaningful connection with the business behind them.
Those welcome sequences didn’t convert well, and I was often hired to rewrite or rework them.
Since noticing that pattern, I started Googling. People have to be talking about this, I thought.
Well, I found lots of tutorials and plenty of articles explaining how to write a welcome email sequence. But, I did not find many people specializing in them or treating them like the important asset they are!
Most conversations skipped straight to complicated funnels, advanced automations, and endless email marketing tactics.
For a service provider or business owner trying to build an email list without burning themselves out, that advice often creates confusion and frustration. It’s like telling someone to bake a loaf of bread with only a loaf of bread as an example.
That was my "aha" moment.
I realized welcome email sequences deserved more attention because they solve several problems at once.
They introduce your story, help subscribers understand their own challenges, build trust, and naturally prepare people for your offer.
That realization eventually became Welcome Email Lab.
Inside Welcome Email Lab
Welcome Email Lab is my done-for-you service for service providers and business owners who want a welcome email sequence that actually works.
Instead of handing you templates and wishing you luck, I build the entire sequence with your business goals and ideal customer in mind.
Here’s how it goes:
We begin with a kickoff call so I can understand your business, your audience, and your goals. You complete a detailed questionnaire that helps me uncover the stories, positioning, and messaging that make your business unique.
From there, I write your complete welcome email sequence using my 4C approach:
🎯 Connection: Introduce yourself, set expectations, and validate the reason they joined your list.
🎯 Clarity: Clarify your customer’s problem and how you’re positioned to fix it.
🎯 Credibility: Why they should trust you (testimonials, expertise, etc.)
🎯 Conversion: Drive your offer home!
Once everything is written, I build the sequence inside your email platform so it is ready to start working immediately. 💪
Your welcome sequence continues building trust even when you take time away from marketing. That’s the biggest benefit of having a welcome email sequence that works!
It becomes the foundation for future newsletters and repurposed content, so you spend less time wondering what to create next.
Instead of relying on social media to explain your business every day, every new subscriber receives your core message automatically.
And if your biggest challenge is figuring out why your email marketing feels stuck before investing in a complete welcome sequence, my one-on-one strategy session, Your Email Comeback, helps you identify the biggest bottleneck in your email marketing and gives you a personalized 30-day action plan to move forward.
Future Goal: Email Marketing That Is Simple AND Effective
I’m putting it out there into the universe: I want capacity-first marketing to become the norm! And I want fewer business owners to feel like success requires being everywhere all the time.
I want more businesses to tell meaningful stories, build genuine relationships, and create evergreen systems that continue serving their audience for years. Because you’re building a business to fund the life you want. You only get one chance at living, and I want you to be offline!
That is why I care so much about email marketing.
Your welcome email sequence is one of the few marketing assets that can introduce your story, connect with your audience's problems, build trust, and create consistent sales without asking you to start from scratch every single week.
That kind of marketing gives you breathing room, and I want you to have that.
Ready to Build a Welcome Sequence That Keeps Working for You?
If you are ready to stop relying on scattered marketing and start building an email system that fits your capacity, apply for Welcome Email Lab.
